How to have O-1 heat treated

I understand this is kind of a stupid question, but I've looked around and not found the answer...

I have five integral hatchets made out of 1/4" O-1 that are 13" long. I want to send to Peters Heat Treating this week with 27 other small knives also out of O-1.

I have no real idea of how to ask them to heat treat the hatchets and have never sent anything out to be heat treated (the last batch a friend of mine sent with his tooling for work and they came back great, but I had nothing to do with it). Will they differentially heat treat the head to around 58-60 and leave the shaft softer or is there a middle RC hardness to ask for the entire hatchet that would be fine? The knives are no issue, I'm really just not sure what to do with these hatchets.

As an aside, does anyone have their current price list? I emailed them twice in the last two weeks with no response and the newest one I've seen is a year old.

Call them and ask for Brad in the cutlery division. They are frankly awful about returning e-mails. You will get a lot more info by speaking directly, anyway.

I doubt very much that they will differentially-temper large pieces like that. I also doubt there's much benefit in it, but that's another discussion. Off the top of my noggin, I'd ask them to HT/temper the whole thing to 58 or even 60 Rc (yes, they can be that specific). If you really want, you could selectively temper the shafts down to a lower hardness later fairly easily.

Thank you. That's all I really needed to know. I'll just have them do the entire thing at 58. I'm new to this and just wasn't sure what I should ask for and be realistic about it.

May I suggest something? Pick up your local yellow pages and look for local heat treaters. I hate spending money on shipping. Since the steel is O1 any heat treater will do it.
No disrespect to Peter Bos, but you may be able to save some money and establish a relationship locally that you will need going forward.

I've looked online recently and there really aren't any close. I'd still have to ship to any other place I found. I'll look again and see if there is any place I missed.
