How to identify Real Damascus from fake?

What do you mean by fake damascus? Only fake damascus I have seen were obvious- cheap squiggly lines etched on crappy chinese junk knives. I have seen some cheap damascus, and it looked like crappy damascus, but it was real nevertheless.

Edit: If you are still unsure, and need to know for certain, you could polish the blade and re-etch, if it is real damascus, the pattern will show back up.

Are you curious about any blade in particular? Got pics?
 
The damascus pattern can just be etched on the blade.Some also call Damasteel 'fake damascus'.If you study enough real damascus you should be able to tell the fake etched ones.
