Guys, I built a nice bowie with a Wrought Iron guard and a stag handle and I've noticed a small line of rust at the blade/guard junction.I know that this is probably from not killing the flux from soldiering the guard long enough. I used acra-glass and a treaded tang with a nut brazed to the pomell for the construction.. Is it possible to treat the rust without taking the knife apart, if not will it be possible to save the stag ??

I kill or neutralize the flux with ammonia. If the erosion is shallow you should be able to buff out.

Get some phosphoric acid, AKA naval jelly/rust remover/etc., and rub a small amount into the rust. Wipe off with a paper towel. Buff with 4/0 steel wool. Repeat a couple times. The phosphoric acid will convert the rust to a black material - iron phosphate- the excess will buff off with the steel wool.. It will take care of the problem nicely. Once done, oil well with a good protectant.

I've found a product called Evapo-rust works really well, and is much safer than the acids. Converts the red Ferrous Oxide to black Ferric Oxide. Take a while, but doesn't etch the steel...

Phosphoric acid isn't a dangerous acid. It is what they used to make fountain drinks in the old days, before CO2 bottles. I used to go to a soda fountain (bet you haven't used that term lately) that still sold Lime Phosphates. It is similar in strength to the carbonic acid in carbonated drinks. The description of the Evapo-Rust makes me think it is some sort of similar liquid. It will turn the rust into a black primer.

I've always wondered about Naval Jelly and whether or not it was effective.

oh yeah on the "old days" :) (mine were the early 60's) Dad & I would hit the drug store fountain regularly  My gig was always (& still is) a great big Chocolate Malt though ;)

But yeah....... I'm going to have to try out the Naval Jelly , I've got a couple things around here that will benefit.
