I have yet to lose a knife carried via clip (knocking on some wood, here), but I did have and old timey Cold Steel Voyager, a small tanto with a molded-on Grivory (or was it Griv-Ex back then?) clip that broke off when I snagged it on a doorway when passing through. Since the knife was already in my pocket, it simply dropped in there. I don't recall finding the broken bit of clip, but I sent the knife back to Cold Steel for their "repair or replace" warranty, and they replaced the tanto with the smaller clip point in this picture, below, in which you can see the metal clip they have since used. I suppose that means they replaced a lot of them. That said, I liked the knife enough to buy the larger one, too, and ever since then, I've avoided pocketknives with plastic clips lest they snag, break, and I lose the whole works...

I lost a Bob Terzuola Spyderoc which had a clip many years ago. I kept losing SAK's out of my front right trouser pocket, so in 2001 with a OH SAK I put it on a 1/8-inch thick bungie type cord as a lanyard about 18 inches long. Loop on one end so I could run the SAK back thru the loop and have it on my belt. Could take it off without having to open the belt. Can do about 95% of what I need done with the SAK still on the lanyard attached to the belt. Being carrying it that way since 2001, still have the OH SAK so it must be working. John

What a timely question.
Sat. 6th I had a $60 knife clipped in the band of my bathing suit.
Dove off the boat, swam 40 yards. So much for that plan.

Thank you. 😁

Surprised it took so long.

I've been kind of thinking that clips might be an issue so it's interesting to see this post. I've lost knives quite often. When clipped in front pocket and sit it pushes them up and out. I almost always find them the next day in the chair I sat in coming in from working outside. Except for my Benchmade bugout, the aluminum handle one seems gone forever at this point outside. I've used metal detectors but can't seem to find it over the acreage I walked that day. I've often had them come off on the tractor sitting as well. I even tried the back right hip area on the pants and one of the knob posts ones came open and nearly cut me.

But since I've switched to slippies in a slip on the pocket no issues.even without the slip. Something about how the weight shifts the pocket instead of pushing the knife out like the clip just seems to magically orient the knife for me. I still use the clip knives, love the birds eye chaparral among a few select others. They seem more convenient for one hand around the garden but I also don't mind the extra steps using a slipped slippie. Sometimes it's nice to be mindful and appreciate the process of it all.

I've been carrying a knife for 70 plus years. Started back in the 5th grade. Case Stockman or such. Then in the late 70s or 80s along comes the one bladed one hand openers with a clip. Liked the idea of one hand opening especially when you were holding on to something that needed to be cut. But these damned clips are the quickest way I know of to loose a knife. Over the years I have had 4 knives slip out of my pocket. Found 3 of them. Had one escape this morning. Fortunately I found it. But that is the last of using the damned clips. The knife can just go in the bottom of my pocket from now on, Who else feels the same?
Yup!

If you're going to put it in your pocket add a leather sheath slide. They work great.

Interesting thread, I’m very surprised to read so many have trouble with clips. I have to wonder if it’s the kind of pants or material, or some other factor, that’s leading to lost knives.

I’ve only had one clipped knife pull out of my pocket and it didn’t get lost. None have worked themselves out. My pockets are usually big and deep, and I don’t wear tight pants. I could see shallower pockets on tighter pants/shorts leading to this. My point is maybe it’s the clothes more than the clips.

The only times I've ever had is when the clip will get caught on something and bend. I just take the clip off and rebend it.

Last one I permanently lost was at the State Fair a few years ago...... (metal detectors)

:/

I lost more of the regular slip joints that slide out of my pocket when I sit down.

I’ve had one clipped to my pocket that fell out. Luckily found it, it has smooth wood scales I partly blame.
