How to maintain/sharpen carving knife?

I am no sharpening expert and I am also as blind as a bat, but that looks to me like the edge is a bit too thin.

I would go with the suggestion above regarding a microbevel. But I wouldn't give it more than 3-5 strokes per side, just enough to knock down that thin edge a tiny bit.

have done some reading re carving knives and whatever you go with it needs to be simple and portable. Many folks keep a firm strop right next to them while they work and touch it up frequently as they go. Green CrO is likely way too fine for this type of application. Flexcut Gold, or a stainless compound in the 1-3 micron (or larger - maybe 10 micron) range will still put a very smooth edge on and be aggressive enough to restore wear and slight damage. A forum dedicated to carving might be better place to look for advice on this one...

Yeah I have my hard strop next to my project while I'm carving and touch it up often. I think I'm going to create an account on a board that Mark linked me to. :)

Edit - a heavier compound may be just the ticket...
