I got a hold of some Cow leg bone and want to know what is the best way to make a handold. Should I split the dried section I have and then simply drill a socket for the spindle to rest in?

Any suggestions?

Make a handhold for what? If you could give us more details on what you want to do with it, it will help us help you.

I believe he wants the socket hand hold for the spindle of a bow drill. I heard bone works well as it creates less friction.

Sorry Talfuchre I don't have the experience to help you. By the way your name cracks me up:D

I wish I can find a cool way of calling my self ShortBastard, till then call me Tony:D

I take a hacksaw and saw the bone in a section about 2/12'' long and then I saw it in half making sure I have the thickest part for my hand. I then take a power sander and round off all the sharp edges so it fits my hand comfortably.
Then turn it over and make a starter hole on the inside with a 1/2'' bit. Do not go in more than an 1/8''. I can't post pictures but maybe Kevin E will see this post and send some photos of the one I gave him. They work really great and seem to have a natural lubricant in the bone which makes them almost frictionless. Hope this helps.

Oldman - I was hoping you were going to post. Thanks so much.

Do you then create a shoulder on your spindle? If so - what size?

TF

I always make a shoulder/taper on my drills. The smaller the end where contact is made with the socket the less friction. If you want I have a handout that I use at my school and would be happy to e-mail you a copy.
Send me your e-mail to wlcwe@localnet.com
