How to make a survival fire from a battery and staple

Good idea, if that's all you had on hand.
You'll get a lot more attempts at starting a fire if you use a Firesteel, a good striker and PJCBs.
 
Fine steel wool works better - you can form a strand long enough to touch both contacts without disemboweling the battery. I think it is a useful skill to have. Then again, if you are going to have char cloth on you, then you will probably also have a way striking a spark.
