I wanted to use some Yucca stalk for a fire board. But all the ones i found have a very soft insides. What am i doing wrong??? Am i looking at the wrong Yucca, or the wrong part of Yucca?? I got the hang of the fire steal. So now i want to get more into the basics and use a hand drill.. The drill i got covered.

Hey Sasha,

I don't have any experience with Yucca (not native up here) but if I may suggest: if you don't have any experience with friction fire, I'd recommend learning bow drill first. Most of the principles involved in bow drill are the same as in hand drill, but bow drill is easier for most to learn. Just my 2 cents.

Hi Doc i went so some classes and the guys showed me both ways to make fire. His fire board was made from Yucca. I made the fire much faster with a plain hand drill. I might see this guy again next month and im going to drill him alot more about it(pun intended). I think you posted before that you used hand and bow drill. What do you use for the fire board and how do you prepare it???

Hey Sasha,

I use the same material for a hand drill hearth that I do for a bow drill hearth, only thinner. Specifically, I use woods like Basswood (Tilia americana), Eastern Cottonwood (Populus deltoides), Eastern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis), Box Elder/Manitoba Maple (Acer negundo), Willow (Salix sp.), Staghorn Sumac (Rhus typhina) and others. Incidentally, in the foregoing list they go from my most favoured to ones, less so.

I think you're in California. There was a guy by the name of Storm and Firestorm that posted on different discussion forums. Unfortunately, he has sinced passed away. A very knowledgable man who did extensive testing of hand drill materials in your area. I'll see if I can find a link.

Sasha, I don't know if you checked out anything else on that site, but if not, here's a link to the page. You will see there is a part 2.

Aye doc i did find the second one. Took me a while to find it lol... Thanks again Doc.
