How to make Kydex sheaths

Why ppl looking for kydex??? Isn't kydex will scratch blade!
For that reason, i like leather better......

any thoughts on kydex choice?

I make some and I buy some... I got all my supply's from http://www.knifekits.com/kk_1mainframe.htm
It can get expensive to get started if you wanna do it right... I think the thinner kydex is much easier to work with on smaller blades. Buy a few extra sheet's of kydex... easy to make mistakes

Here's a shot of the sheath I made the other day for my FBM... Gonna do one for the LE when I get more time. I added some flat black camo krylon to match the Desert Camo on the FBM

Kydex will only scratch is things get in the sheath. That's why a drain hole is great to have and you can keep it fairly clean.

But I like leather as well....

So get a Leatherman kydex/leather sheath :D

As for not doing kydex, you might really enjoy it. Give it a try and don't mind my comments. Just my .02 :)

Making a good sheath will take some practice, making one that looks like the pro stuff takes more practice. If you buy all your stuff from knifekits, you're going to spend a good deal of money, at least in my estimation. My first sheaths are horrible, they reside in a he bottom of a filing cabinet drawer as reminders of how much kydex I "wasted" learning different tricks here or there. I agree, read all you can before you go heating plastic.

If you like making stuff and are handy it can be fun but you won't be able to do it cheaper than a pro rig from leatherface or One shot tactical. I want to try my hand at making some sheaths but for my new SS4 or other nicer knives I want a pro made sheath. I would love to make a sheath for my CS truflight and other
stuff like zippos that are not worth a prosheath.

If you search, and read several tutorials (don't just read one) you can make a good sheath for yourself. Keep in mind that that's a good sheath, not an excellent sheath. Excellent sheaths are still worth the money.

The same thing is true of leather. I could make a solid, functional sheath within the second attempt. I'm 10 deep now and they still look nothing like the amazing work of Mr. Puckett! :o

Another thing I learned? Holsters are MUCH easier than knife sheaths! :)

Awesome first effort realstagman- that would be an awesome fifth effort!

Dave- really great stuff, I really like your "innovations" (that cute little pistol is to piss 'em off so you can pull your knife, right?). If that green flame job comes with the AD, please send me price and payment info.

I would say give it a try just for fun. Here are two that I've made, I've made a total of about ten. All but three or four of them had excellent lockup. I have ordered sheaths from Okuden and Brown and prefer them. I only started making them too because I don't like shipping my knives out.

These are made from the thick kydex.

Ohhhhhhhh crap.... I just heard my front door slam shut. I think my Public Defender variant is on it's way to see you for that insult. ;) :D :p

Raden! Awesome looking job on that FBM sheath! You make the wait for my G10 Blk/Tan even harder to take.

Speaking of blk/tan G10, I need to go bump a thread. ;)

i say go for it. bladeforums got me started in kydex and i used to make a fair sheath if i say so myself. i just haven't had the time to make a sheath, or a knife for that matter, in a long while. so i'll be buying a custom for my FBM.

my advice is to take your time and make a mock up out of cardboard first to get the design worked out before you go cutting, heating and bending. it only took me a few good sheets of kydex before i figured that out.
