My experience with birch was simply that I made my own handle and even though it was my first homemade handle and a bit rough it actually felt better. No shock and extremely light, and that on a 3-3/4 pounder.
All handle woods have their positives and negatives is all I'm saying. I like hickory as well, just like the feel of birch better. Feels more like an extension of the body than a stiff jackammer.
