Recommendation? How to make the hard Choices?

I've downsized from approximately 120 to 30, half of which are keychain SAKs and LMs. So, maybe a dozen real knives? I used the konmari thing, essentially. Does it spark joy? Do I use it? Will I use it? Do I have a connection to it? No? Then I sold it, donated it, gave it away, or trashed it. I kept a SAK Tinker and Buck 112 from my grandfather, a congress pattern and Russlock I liked, a handful of multis I may sells, and likewise with a pair of Spydercos and trio of SAKs. There's no real logic, just a feeling.

Thanks for everyone who chimed in.

Though this process I have learned more about my knife preferences. My most surprising knife to make it to the sell side of the shelf is my ZT0562cf. Thought I would always keep until I recently acquired 3 (possible #4 delivers today!) that I would rather put into my pocket.

The hedge is I can always replace, or upgrade to the xm with the finger choil!

I think you should just buy a larger gun safe to store all of your knives in. That way you don’t regret selling that a knife that you later wished that you had kept.

1. Quality. Be it materials, precise machining or design. Hopefully all together.
2. Suitability. If a lock type or handle size/shape or bad grind is hindering me in efficient and safe work, it is a goner.
Compromise is a personal thing and so is price.

None of this should be hard! If it is, you’re doing it wrong. As long as you have at least one knife you’re covered, so don’t stress over it.

If something doesn’t bring me happiness and I know it won’t in the future, I get rid of it. I usually just keep what I use and enjoy. I’m just not big on “collectibles”. Not a barb at those who are - do what makes you happy. Nobody can tell you how to do that.

I agree! Well said.

You could always layout your collection, crack a beer and start the really like to indifferent pile. Then go through the like pile and see if any of them are obvious keepers or just maybe? Then go through the indifferent pile and see how they compare to the favorites.

Repeat in a few weeks or a month. If there are obvious knives to go, think about gifting them. Even if it takes a few years it’s nice give a knife to someone.

I've turned over my higher end knife collection several time.

I don't have near the collection as most.

I've owned as many as 15 Busse and a handful of customs....

I moved a few Busse every time I bought newer knives.

I own no Busse now, as I moved on towards more custom knives and buying knife making equipment/forge/anvil..

It is a good idea to take stock of where you are, and of you need to whittle down what your collecting.

I have a few I regret letting go, because I can't really replace them.

But life goes on.

Honestly, my analysis revolves arround which knives I'll get a better return on, rather than which ones are my favorite.
