How to Make Vaseline Cotton Balls for Tinder

Terrill Hoffman just warned me to be careful with this stuff in the microwave. Apparently it can catch on fire and when it does it smokes your whole house up for weeks. The ladies evacuate.

Okee doke, thanks. I was zapping it incrementaly until the desired result. I do not wish for the neighbours to see me running through the snow in my jammies and bunny slippers.
 :D

I wonder how cotton balls soaked in mineral oil would work. Mineral oil has a very low flashpoint and therefore; highly flammable.

Try it. I'd be interested in your findings.

Posted earlier this thread

I use Liquid Parafin (Parmasutical Grade Mineral Oil) \thicker than Baby Oil
I take a plastic waterproof match container
Fill it half full with the oil, then fill the container with cotton wool
The cotton really compresses
I then keep topping up with the mineral oil

A small amount of soaked cotton when fluffed burns a long long time
The plastic match boxes are a couple of dollars in REI and places like that,
and they come with a plastic seal between the lid and container, make sure the seal is seated correctly

This method only take a few minutes
And topping up the container after use is really easy

When the cotton is very saturated, fluff up the cotton so it is whispy
And the fire steel catches very easily

I just took a cotton ball and just barely saturated it with mineral oil. It's been burning outside in 48* and windy conditions for the past 3 1/2 minutes. Not a very scientific experiment but fantastic results.

Edit: just burned itself out, a solid 5 and a half minutes after I lit it. Nothing more than putting the cotton over the mouth of the bottle, tipping it once and then lighting it up.

So I was just thinking to myself, "how in the hell can there be a multi-page thread on making PJCBs?" when this little gem of a tip popped up. Cynical smartass question retracted.
