Easy... Pound it with a hammer, run over it with your car, leave it in salt water a few weeks, throw it in a fire... there are many ways a blade can be permnantly marked.
PiterM, etching your mark can be simple. You can use wax as the resist. Heat the blade to melt the wax. When the wax hardens use a scribe to sign your name into the wax. Use salt water and a D. C. power supply to etch into the blade.
You can use a small battery charger for the power supply or I have heard of some people using a 6 volt battery. Practice on some scrap steel to see if you like the mark.
Another option is to take it to the local trophy shop and have them engrave it.
About the cheapest way to mark a blade is to find a tool supply house and buy an inexpensive ($5 - $10) set of letters (as small as 1/16th to as large as 3/8ths) and CAREFULLY select a spot on the knife where you want your mark (letter(s)).
This should be done before you heat treat as you may find that the letters (while hard) may not be as hard as your finished knife. Usually the more you pay for a set of letters or numbers the harder they are but there are always exceptions
If all of the above fails, give the blade to an airborne infanteer...they leave their mark where ever we go
