How to match rust patina

I have been collecting Axes lately. I have some vintage ones that have come from an old barn and look like maybe they were laid on cardboard or something to give them an uneven red rust patina. They can be anything from old heavy red rust to bright finish. I do plan on selling some down the road ( I have to support this habit somehow. LOL) and want them to look gently restored not full mirror bright finish. Is there anything I can do to try to match that rust aged patina that will not damage the original handles on them?

I use a brass cup brush on my drill press. Cleans it up, but leaves a nice dark finish.

Another way to get accelerated patina and "rust finish" is to soak in Ferric Chloride, rinse, and let sit overnight before cleaning up. In the morning, neutralize with TSP and then clean up with steel wool or a brass brush. As always, dry well and oil before putting away.
