ok what im looking for is how to make a jig to fasten to my knife blade blank for when im grindig so i get nice even width on the blade edge what i was useing was a piece of oak with a angle and pre drill holes to attach the blank to it but its really not that reliable does anyone have a better way my free hand is ok but im new at it and a jig or metal jig would im sure be the anser to my un even and slightly off way im doing it now. thanks kellyw

For small blades I made a jig using a door hinge. Welded a plate to both sides on the hinge. One plate sits on the table, the blade is bolted to the other. I use a piece of metal with a screw in it to adjust the angle. Once I get the angle set grinding one side I turn it over and grind the other side. Does a good job on small folder blades but may be too bulky for fixed blades

i think fred rowe made a jig for freehand grinding if you want to give that a try. i'm sure if you ask he'll post some pictures.

Isn't that kind of a oxymoron? "A jig for freehand grinding" :p I'm not one of those that naysay using a jig... just messing with YOU Richard :p

I recommend practice... use either wooden paint stirrers, cheap steel or making knives for grinding practice.
