What is the best way to ship an~85lb Burr King 482 across the country? Burr king lists the dimensions as 21" x 20" x 19," plus packing, with a shipping weight of ~85lb. It looks like this (stock photo):

I've shipped ~100lb machine bases (pretty unbreakable) via Fedex and UPS Ground (the up to 150lb designation), and I've also shipped some big machines via LTL freight. I'm not sure of the best way to ship a (somewhat breakable) grinder.

I would appreciate any thoughts/experiences on:
(1) how to pack it? Should the motor be removed and shipped separately, for example? Are there particularly vulnerable/fragile parts?
(2) what shipping or freight service will give it a good chance of arriving in one piece?

I work in a chemical plant. The equipment that I've seen come shipped together has been custom crated by the manufacturer. You may want to build your own crate/box to ensure all the delicate parts that could break are secured. If you break it down, the receiver may have problems on re assembly and blame you. If you ship in one piece, something happens, at least you know it wasn't on your end. Insure the item so if there is a mishap you will be covered. Take pictures for proof of packing. You may want to call around for shipping prices and who you feel will get it there in one piece

I would dismount the motor and build a crate, lumper and plywood.

bolt it to the crate through some existing holes.

Screw it down to a pallet for loading and handling.

I shipped a couple of massive pillow block bearings recently. I bolted the bearings to a crate I made out of pallet boards and sat the crate inside a double walled cardboard box. It's a pain but better safe than sorry.

The proper way to ship it is to me....

But I'm a trucker and for real put it in a strong box of 2x4 s and ply wood and bolt it to the bottom. Because it's heavy it will be on bottom of any stacks of freight.

I really appreciate the replies, guys. Does anyone know if it stands a better chance in a crate versus on a pallet if I ship it freight? LTL cost is the same for either. I keep seeing visions of someone picking up a box with a forklift and dropping it...
