What do you guys reccomend for basic care on a carbon steel pocket knife? I know keeping it away from moisture, cleaning it, oiling it.....anything else?

its gonna patina regardless, if ya dont like the thought of that happening then you could polish the blade when it gets funky looking. personally i dont do anything other than a thin layer of mineral oil, let nature take its course:D
You could try something like ren-wax or mothers carnuba wax to have an extra barrier, lot depends on if ya use them around food
cheers

Renaissance or other high quality wax will keep it bright. It even keeps the fingerprints off.

I do not really care about looks on this particular one, just function. I know there is a probability of rust if things are not taken care of right....It is going to be a functional user, and I just want to make it last, not preserve it....if that makes sense.

you can make the patina happen. stick it in a potato overnight, take it out in the morning and polish it a little bit to smooth it out, then just keep it clean and a little oil on it.
