How to pick a VFD for a Disc?

Seconded, but if you ever thing you will want a belt grinder with a >1HP motor, I would go with the KBAC 27-D. Its only $100 more, but can power a motor up to 2HP. Both of the VFDs mentioned can be run on 110V or 220V

The KBAC drives are the standard, as far as plug and play vfds go. That said, I'd also keep an eye out on eBay. Found a good deal on a dayton vfd for my disc grinder a while back, which I believe is made by the same company that manufactures the KBACs, as it looks almost identical other than the housing.
I think just about all VFD's are reversible, nearly all of them are for 3 phase motors, but the main things you have to watch for are input power requirements, HP rating, and then the user interface/controls setup. Some are push button (which is a little less convenient than knobs and switches), but MAY be able to be set up with auxiliary controls like a speed pot and forward/reverse switches.

Of course, you also want to consider enclosure ratings, as you'll be creating a lot of conductive dust, which can ruin open framed vfds if accomodations aren't made for it.

There are options for ON/OFF switch and reverse switch. is that literally whether or not there is a switch there?
Stock from the factory, the KBACs DO NOT come with a power switch, or a For/Rev switch, just a "forward/stop" switch. Some guys opt to turn it off with a breaker or an external switch, and not ever application calls for reverse, so kbac doesn't supply it unless you order them. You can save a few bucks if you source your own. and make you're own jumpers, but depending on what you already have available to you, you probably won't be saving a ton. They're standard sized On/Off and On/Off/On toggle switches. Dust proof boots are optional.

So i would just pop off the rubber cover on forward/stop/reverse and wire this into it? Would there be slots for it below or would i have to find a wiring diagram

i have whatever Beaumont was using for the KMG's when they first switch to AC motors. The started offering reverse later and I asked if I could retrofit mine with one and they said yes. I haven't done it yet, because I am cheapened lazy, but I need to. But I am the guy who has had a Nathan disc for a couple of years and still hasn't bought a motor or a splitter form my drive box.

If time is money and you need it up and running and don't want to wait on switches from Ebay I would just order it with the switches already wired up. It's not hard to do if you want to do it your self but by the time you buy wire, switches, spade plugs for internal hook up it's just easier to order it done....I wired up my first one and ordered my other two wired ready to rock...The operating manual which is an On-Line PDF shows all you need to do to wire it.

I'll second what Busto said. I just got a kbac-29 and ordered the additional on/off and forward/reverse switches. Tie forward/reverse simply plugs into connections on the board. The on/off you pull a couple factory jumpers off the board and hook up the switch. I'll also second going up to at least the 27 vfd. You can always hook up a 2hp motor to it. With the 24 you are stuck at 1hp. I'm loving my 3hp iron horse motor. Glad I spent the extra $$.
