I'm heat treating O1 and Ive heard about stainless foil, protective paints, and some decarb powder. I was wondering which one is the best to use in a propane HT oven. I would also like to know where to buy these products.

Thanks guys

protective paints should be fine for o1 steel. the problem is you have to wait until it fully dryed to heat treat. usually required at least 20 hours. when you paint it, make sure the liquid is fully sticked to the blade. other wise the air will stay inside reduce the effectiveness of the coating.

i am not sure where you can buy those in usa. it shouldn't be hard i think, quiet cheap too. its like $100 something for 40lb+ in china. you can coat 100+ claymore size sword with that.

Would a very light and thin wash of Satanite work for anti scale? Or, would it inhibit the hardening process? I'm talking about a VERY light wash of Satanite, BTW.

I use satinite for anti-scale,a very thin wash, looks like grey water.Brush it on and dry with the heat gun.I also use a temp controlled kiln and quench oil.My Rc numbers have allways been right on.
I use it on all carbon steels and damascus.

Good to know; I'll try it next time I heat treat some O1.

A thin coat of satanite won't harm the hardening of O-1 at all. It's used on 1095 by folks.
