So I am making my first knife, and am having a bit of a problem. I am not sure how to cut a piece out of my blank for a stock removal knife.

I have a band saw, should I use that? If so, any blade recommendations for my 56 1/2 inch saw? I also have an angle grinder but I have zero practice with it. The stock is 1/4 O1 tool steel.

On a side note, do you know of any lubricants that will not dissolve tool makers blue? I tried silicon liquid wrench and wd40, which both dissolved it and am currently using olive oil.

Thanks in advance

Adam

It's good that you made a wooden template first. How does it feel in the hand? The handle looks like it has an excessive amount of curve in it. It could be awkward to use. And you'll probably want the belly or swell of the handle to happen a bit closer to the guard. If you are referring to a lubricant to use with your bandsaw I don't think you need any if you are running the blade at the right FPM. A narrower bandsaw blade will allow you to cut tighter radius curves but you don't need to cut out the blank in one continuous cut. You can cut out pieces until it's all cut out.

I tried drilling before but it didn't really work, I will try again though. I just stopped at my local home depot and they did not have any blades for metal unfortunately. And as for the swell, it is very comfortable in my hands. The handle is designed for a rear grip for better chopping, and when I choke up with the choil, there is enough room.

Thanks guys

Of course I managed to mess it up :/. This happened on both sides of the blade, and advice? (that's in the choil so i cant just hacksaw it). And what do other larger scale custom knife makers use, laser-cutting, water-jet, cnc router etc.? should i just use my angle grinder?

I think larger scale most likely water-jet there multiple blanks.

Not sure what the issue is, I would use my bandsaw that this point, make sure it is metal cutting, wood bandsaws do not work. I have cut many out with a angle grinder. If the issue to the hole that does not go all the way through just round it out with the angle grinder. Wear gloves and eye protection, the dust will go every where so maybe outside if that is an issue.

Cut where you can with the hacksaw, and clean the excess out with a good file. The holes don't have to be close together in the flat section. You will probably spend more time drilling than sawing would take.

So the file wasnt working and my local home depot doesnt carry metal cutting bandsaw blades, but luckily my dremel saved the day. I just used a cutting wheel as much as possible and broke it off with my hands.

Looks good, need some file work, buy a good file and it will be easier. Be sure to drill your pin holes prior to heat treat. I would actually start with the angle grinder, because I am lazy. Place you template back over and reestablish your outline.
