That's correct. Oota is the "O" sound stretched, not "Oh". But using the Hepburn Romanization, it would be written Oota. And people would read it as oota (as in pool)
Hence many Japanese who have the 大 Oo character in their names use "Oh".

However this not related to the earlier translation of Kaiken as Kwaiken. At that time Chi was written Ti, and Zu was writtten Du. It was messy until Hepburn came along.
