I recently found a robert mole and sons machete hidden away in my friends garage. It was owned by his grandfather and he and I used it a lot growing up. I would love to be able to get in back in working condition but I don't know the first thing about refurbishing old blades. So far I have removed the wooden handle because it was cracked and warped, then sanded off as much of the rust as I could before soaking it in white vinegar. It was only later that I realized I should have used rust remover because now it has small black specks of patina throughout the blade, I'm guessing my next step is to use a rust remover with a stiff bristled brush to fully clean the blade. Since its a low carbon steel I'm going to tape off the cutting edge and apply a cerakote finish. The biggest hurdle right now is crafting a replacement handle. I would prefer a paracord wrap but I don't know if that will be possible because the tang is pretty thin and it would end up taking over the pommel. I know I need to maintain some type of pommel but I don't know how that would be possible with paracord. I saw a few examples of people crafting wooden handles by gluing blocks of wood together and shaping a handle using a bench grinder. I already have a bench grinder I can use if it comes down to that but I'm really looking for the simplest solution What I really need right now is an in depth step by step guide to how I can fully refurbish this machete. Attached are pictures of both sides to show where I'm at.
