How to remove sharpie from a knife

There are a variety of permanent markers that sometimes people refer to generically as "Sharpees". I usually try rubbing alcohol first. If that doesn't work acetone or nail polish remover is my second choice. They make acetone preps that are like alcohol preps. They are both real handy.

Acetone will take off the coatings. If 70% rubbing alcohol isn't doing it, which it should try 91%. You can find it in the drug stores next to the 70%

spit and a t-shirt, but if that's not available i guess you could try some of the other suggestions.

Ethanol (the alcohol that you drink) works for me. I believe you can get the denatured formulation at the your local hardware store, it has a trace of other organic solvents that makes it taste bad and unfit to drink.

This thread just keeps going... :D

I use baby wipes. Safe enough for, well, a baby's behind, and takes the Sharpie off in a few seconds. They'll also dissolves packing tape residue and other gunk stuck to working knives.

..and going, and going... just like that bunny. :)

If the marker/sharpie is fresh, alcohol, or lighter fluid should do it...you may have to use both, since sharpies are chemically a combination of colors (the black is, anyway) and sometimes the separate colors (typically red + green or cyan=black) have different solubilities. Sometimes just soap n' water will work.
As the mark gets older it seems to get tougher, so you might need a more 'active' solvent like acetone. Sooo...
In this order:
1. spit + a tee shirt,
2. soap n' water,
3. zippo fluid,
4. rubbing alcohol ( or better, denatured alcohol),
5. acetone.

If none of that works, you'll have to get agressive, with Cameo or Bar Keepers Friend, or Comet...but this is usually not necessary.

In the future, use a "dry erase" marker, as said before...it'll just wipe off easily.

End of story, for me anyway. :)

I'll say it again, WD 40 will remove Sharpie, Magic Marker, and any of the others.
