How to say Tidioute?

According to the folks at SMKW you pronounce it Tee-Dee-You. Whether that's correct or not I couldn't say for sure, but enough of them pronounced it that way to make me believe they were correct.

Yeah. But they also pronounced "abalone" abalown instead of abaloknee and they regularly butchered Bob Terzuola's last name terra-zoola. So I wouldn't put a lot of faith in their pronunciations.

I believe it is pronounced tiddy-yoot. I've never heard it said any other way.

The name is an Iroquoian word meaning "protrusion of land", referring to a sharp bend in the Allegheny River.

Ok this has me all out of sorts. For so long now I've wondered about this and finally resolved to myself a pronunciation. Now this new bit of information has my mind reeling, lol

I used to think it was a place where the tide went out.Unfortunately it's too far from the sea for that.
I've adopted it as part of my daily shouting at the kids daily ritual . "Boys, can you tidy out yer rooms " or "get those schoolbags tidied out will ya please. NOW! NO! NOOOOOW!"

I f there is one thing I've learned from my Aussie flatmate, it's that Australians have a shortened version for every word (pushy, footy, cardie, sunnies, Meako, you name it) so I am curious, what is Australian for Tidioute? :D ;)

I am thinking that the shortened version would be a note from the mods in your private box!

Hilarious exchanges fellers - didn't want to quote the entire page! :D

Well done Charlie! :D

I'm sure you could already pronounce it Paul - along with carry-oot! ;) :D

Best first guess would be something along the lines of ...
"Ay Meako , can ya grab me Ooty out of the Ute? Ta mate.""no wukkin furries"
We tend to use a version of rhyming slang as well.
Ay sweetie.dont suppose theres any chance of a tiddyoot (root)?

This is correct. I've been to the town of Tidioute many times when I was a kid, an uncle used to have a camp there. This is how the locals said it.

Yep tiddy-yoot. Went to deer camp there in the 60's and 70's. Remember seeing that super cool modern Buck 110 there. Good times, miss my beloved Western Pa.

I asked the pretty lady who was in the booth at the Spirit of Steel show in Knoxville in August of 2011,she blushed a little and replied "tiddy out".
