Here is one that I got

Dear Matthew:

Thank you for contacting me regarding regulations on firearms. I appreciate your input on this national conversation and I welcome the opportunity to respond.

As you know, on January 16, 2013, President Obama introduced more than 20 recommendations to curb gun violence in the United States. Many North Dakotans have expressed concerns that these proposals could infringe upon their Second Amendment rights.

As a sportsman and an elected official, I have always been a strong proponent of the Second Amendment, and I don't believe restrictions on gun ownership by law-abiding individuals will address the problem of gun violence in America. To truly reduce violence in our society, Congress needs to take a thoughtful, comprehensive approach in order to build bipartisan support and, more importantly, to arrive at effective measures that will actually succeed.

There are things that we can and should do to protect our children and reduce violence in our communities. For example, we need to find ways to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and people with mental illnesses, as well as to provide greater security for students in our schools. In addition, we need to make sure that the gun laws that are already on the books are being fully enforced, and that individuals who lie on gun permit applications, which is a federal felony, are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

I am confident that by working together, we can find ways to reduce gun violence and make our nation safer for all, without infringing on the Second Amendment or other rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. Again thank you for taking the time to contact me. If you have further concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at (202) 224-2551.

Sincerely,
John Hoeven
United States Senator

Got a PM from a BLADE member asking how to post a link to the Ruger site on Facebook?

Since I got hacked when I tried Facebook, my only social media are a few Forums.... I couldn't help him.

Anyone?

here's my lone response - I like her "we don't need more more gun laws" stance:

Dear Vik:

Thank you for contacting me to express your concerns about the recent tragedy in Connecticut and your opposition to proposals to expand gun control laws in response to the tragedy. As your representative in Washington, I want you to know that I value your thoughts and concerns.

I extend my condolences to the family and friends of victims in Newtown, Connecticut. What happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School is an inexplicable tragedy, and every parent’s worst nightmare. In the future, I hope we can have an honest discussion about what causes tragedies like this one, and how we can prevent them from happening. In that discussion, we need to focus on how our country approaches mental health. It is my hope that we ensure all families have access to resources and support in order to prevent mentally unstable individuals from harming themselves and others. Prevention must start with improving accessibility and affordability so that folks can get the care they need.

I believe that at its core, the problem is not the absence of law, but the lack of respect for human life. While additional gun control measures will have little impact on criminals, they will have the most significant adverse effect on law-abiding citizens. Growing up in rural Kansas, I've known from a young age that as Americans, we cherish our right to keep and bear arms. As your representative, I will work to ensure that right remains intact.

Thank you again for contacting me. Please never hesitate to call, email, or write if you have any issues or concerns on your mind. Also feel free to visit my website at www.lynnjenkins.house.gov where you can see what I have been up to and sign up for my weekly newsletter.

Sincerely,

This came in yesterday from my governor:

January 31, 2013

Dear Friend:

Thank you for writing to express your opposition to new laws regarding gun control.

I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.

Acting on my commitment to take a full and comprehensive look at the intersection of gun control, addiction, mental health and school safety in New Jersey, I have created the NJ SAFE Task Force. The Task Force will be chaired by two former attorneys general of New Jersey and members who have expertise in the fields of mental health diagnosis and treatment, addiction services and treatment, law enforcement and school safety.

Violence in our society has never been solely about firearms, and we would miss an opportunity to better prevent the roots of violence if we didn't look at the complete picture. If we are truly going to take an honest and candid assessment of violence and public safety, we have to look more deeply at the underlying causes of many acts of violence. That means removing the stigma and evaluating issues of mental health, addiction, prevention and treatment services alongside the effectiveness of our firearms laws, enforcement mechanisms and our school safety measures. This task force will convene immediately and report back with its findings.

My commitment has always been to evaluate public safety, criminal policy and behavioral science with an approach that recognizes that these issues cannot be separated from one another. The SAFE Task Force will further my commitment in that regard as we look at how we can better guarantee violence control.

I hope you find this information helpful. Thank you again for writing.

Sincerely,

Chris Christie

Governor

Since my career is dealing with the mentally ill, plus helping folks who want off drugs and/or alcohol, I'm especially glad to see several responses from our elected Representatives that recognize: the problem ain't guns; it's really sick people getting access to & using guns.

I sent mine 1/25. Got this back today from Senator Feinstein:

Thank you for contacting me to share your opposition to assault weapons legislation. I respect your opinion on this important issue and welcome the opportunity to provide my point of view.

Mass shootings are a serious problem in our country, and I have watched this problem get worse and worse over the 40 years I have been in public life. From the 1966 shooting rampage at the University of Texas that killed 14 people and wounded 32 others, to the Newtown massacre that killed 20 children and 6 school teachers and faculty, I have seen more and more of these killings. I have had families tell me that they no longer feel safe in a mall, in a movie theater, in their business, and in other public places, because these deadly weapons are so readily available. These assault weapons too often fall into the hands of grievance killers, juveniles, gangs, and the deranged.

I recognize that the Second Amendment provides an individual right to bear arms, but I do not believe that right is unlimited or that it precludes taking action to prevent mass shootings. Indeed, in the same Supreme Court decision that recognized the individual right to bear arms, District of Columbia v. Heller, the Court also held that this right, like other constitutional rights, is not unlimited. That is why assault weapons bans have consistently been upheld in the courts, both before and after the Heller decision. I believe regulation of these weapons is appropriate.

Once again, thank you for your letter. Although we may disagree, I appreciate hearing from you and will be mindful of your thoughts as the debate on this issue continues. If you have any additional comments or questions, please do not hesitate to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841.

Sincerely yours,

Dianne Feinstein
