How to sharpen a Commander?

When I was at TREXPO in AUG 2000, I asked Ernie that same question and this is how he told me to do it.

Get a round diamond sharpener like the one that DMT sells for doing serrated blades. Lay the knife flat on the edge on a table so that the edge of the blade is past the edge of the table. Start with the round diamond at the pivot and try to match the angle of the grind and then stroke it toward the tip. You should be able to tell that the diamond is making full contact with the ground edge by looking at it. Once you get it sharp, then strope the backside of the blade on a piece of cardboard to take off any burrs kicked up. If you are too heavy handed you may have to stroke the backside with the diamond once if you kicked up a heavy burr. I have done this several times to my Commander and it comes out very sharp.

Hope this helps,

Lynn

Thanks man...I think I better keep looking for someone to re-grind it for me.

Yeah man...just about 30 secs. ago in fact. I'll let ya know what happenes. Can't wait. Theirs just something about the COmmander I like, though I can't stand G10, chisel grinds, tip up carry, and blade coatings...not to mention the thin liners. All this, and I still feel I need a Commander. Wonder what it is.

BTW man...I've been told by a few guys that the edge really can't be re-profiled in this manner too easiy, w/o ruining the blade? Do you know different? David wants $60 to satin teh blade, and $25 to strip the coating...so I may just find me a HC Commander to see if I really like it before spending so much...does the HC finish hold up well? Similar to MT's coatings? Thanks!!!

I've seen a Commander that's been reground to a common "V" grind and it came out well.

In my experience the HC holds up great. Actually more durable then the Black-T.
