How to Sharpen a Knife

Also, I made my own leather strop stick this past weekend. I took an old Harley Davidson belt, cut it to size, and glued it with two part epoxy to a 3" wide and about 1.2ft long piece of 1' thick wood trimmed to match the width and length of the belt. After it finished drying I took a vibrating sander and sanded a layer off of the belt(now glued to the wood) and brought it down to a perfectly flat leather surface(that also had a nice fuz texture to it). I rubbed on a little of that eraser-looking rubbing compound and it works like a charm for the final stage of sharpening. Perfect for taking the micro burr off of the blade similar to how straight razors are sharpened with a leather belt.

What's your connection to bladecrazy.com? Seems like about all you do here at Bladeforums is post links to that store....

well i think he is cleverly hiding his spam, I spent a long time looking at all the knives there.

Yeah, if I had posted such a thing I would have picked up yet another infraction from an over zealous mod....Anybody have experience of Böker's Vulkanus sharpening device while we are about it?

willgoy, mods aren't overzealous. Mods simply don't always see problems right away or see every similar post as a problem. It's often a judgement call, which you don't have to get judgemental about.

Also, you're better off asking a new question in a new thread, rather than piggybacking on a thread with a different topic.

Essav, point taken, and mods like you and Cougar are certainly not over zealous but are fair and encouraging.

I've been wanting to make myself a strop too. Can anyone name a good place buy this "compound" everyone seems to rub-into their strops AND what kind/type to buy? Thanks. BTW--I'll be at work until 11 PM and will check back when I get home. Didn't want anyone thinking I was being a dick by not responding right away! Now to renew my Gold Membership! Have a great weekend fellas. Jim SEMPER FI

James, try the veritas green compound sold by lee valley.....

or any of the diamond pastes that you can buy from the online shops selling shaving supplies...
