How to simulate folding mechanics?

Hi all.

I have plans to make a friction folder for my second knife, and was wondering what would be the best way to simulate the the folding mechanism.

What would be the most realistic way to mimic and manipulate the tolerances of a folding knife, without actually using steel?

Thanks for the help.

Most start with paper or thin cardboard
and a thumbtack for the profile.

Use any material besides steel - preferably one that is easier to shape and fit. Formica, MDF, kydex...Almost anything

I found plexiglas a poor material to work with for patterns Formicaor Arborite or other counter top stuff is very stable, grinds and drills very well and most often is free if you go to a cabinet shop and ask for scraps.Frank
