how to split a log with a folding saw

I've sometimes just sawed a starter cut into the top of the log then used a small wooden wedge. But that's a very cool approach.

that looks like it took more energy then it would have to swing an axe.

i like to carry both saw and axe when im out. although in a pinch if i was to lose my axe or didnt bring one along then that looks handy.

i'd still probably just saw the wood into sections and baton it :)

thanks for the interesting vid!

cheers

Great technique! As I don't really feel completely comfortable carrying and using my Wetterlings hatchets this demonstration looks like one more way I can use my Gerber sliding saw.

Well never seen that before, pretty neat.
he makes some interesting videos.
On a side note, When ever people refer to them self as "The Silverfox" I just want to reach trough the screen and slap them till they promised NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER to do that again, and then just a few times more for good measure!

Yeah, the nickname is kind of lame, but I watched a couple of his vids and they're pretty down-to-earth.

Neat vid. But I don't think I'd ever be scared of my axe, or whine about carrying one.

I do like his "how to wear a blanket" video. A wool blanket is a very handy and overlooked item, yet also very heavy. The axe apparently weighs too much, but not the blanket?

Thanks for sharing that link. I later found the same technique in Ray Mears book "Essential Bushcraft". Now I must try my Lapplander with this technique.
This part of Bladeforums is my favourite, because every now and then, I learn new bushcraftstuff.

Very cool video. Interesting little tidbit to file away. Like adding another tool to the toolbox. Right there when ya need it. Thanks for sharing.

I just got back from a walk in the woods with the better half, and tried this. I used my Gerber/Fiskars sliding blade saw.

All I have to say is WOW! It really works like a charm!

I sawed off a standing limb from a deadfall, and it was no trouble to split it along the grain. The second time I did it, the wood really came apart showing the inner heart wood.

Hatchet? Who needs a hatchet?

I like the idea, particulary for making a hearthboard. Nice thing about a saw over an axe is you can use it in the dark.

good point RH!

Good link, but I prefer to baton through wood. It is more fun. Unless in a survival situation, whichever requires less energy..
