How to Spot a Fake

Hi all,

I recently read a post saying that fake Busses occasionally turn up as no-logo models. I'm confident I could spot a fake by beating on a knife, but what would a knowledgable HOG look for to spot a fake without resorting to abuse? Just for the record, I don't think I've ever received one and have bought most all my knives directly from Busse. Also I'd trust a known HOG over my own opinion.

Yeah... what Skunk said!!!

or trying to rip me off by using my signature huge, bold font.

They're all fake-azz bastages!!!!!

Perhaps I am just naive about this, but I think fake Busse knives are so very, very rare, that it is not worth concerning yourself about. Anyway, if it's a concern, then buy known, recognizable, one-off Busse knives, and/or buy from known and trusted people.

P.S.

I recently read a post saying that fake Busses occasionally turn up as no-logo models.

Could you please provide us with the link to this post? I'm very curious, and I'm sure many others here are, too.

If you see a "Busse" for sale, and the seller mentions Amy's name or that "chicks dig it", then you know it's clearly a fake!!! :grumpy: :grumpy:

What he said.

In all the years I've been collecting/using Busses I've never run into a fake that was trying to be passed off as a Busse. Sometimes you may run into pieces that have aftermarket modifications on them that people may attempt to pass off as Busse Customs or as Variants, but I've never run into anything I would considers a Busse "fake"

They may be out there, I just haven't seen them.

Just in case, here are some tips.
1) Become familar with old and new Busse Models (ie look at a lot of pics and handle a lot of knives)

2) Look for things that are common to all current Busse models (ie talon hole, micarta handles)

3) Just because it has a logo don't assume it is a Busse, if someone is going to all the work to make a fake it isn't too hard to fake a logo (I've never seen this occur but just in case)

My best advice is to view a lot of pics and try pick up Jerry's "style" on his knives. Then you should be able to see a knife that you've never seen before and tell if it has some of those qualities.

Good luck

:D:D

Tip #4.

Take a peek inside Porkerson's safe. If you don't see that particular Busse in there, then it's clearly a fake.

:p

Okay, it was a trick question.
Jerry would never show up as a model of any kind! Let alone pass as one.

You HAVE to be careful. There are many, many, fake cardboard sheaths out there. Look at the folds, the amount of tape used, and the knife/sheath ratio, all these are dead giveaways for a real Busse cardboard sheath. Accept NO imitation!
Good Luck!

If it says "Bussse" it may be a fake.
If it says "made in taiwan" ........
If it sells for sub-$200 it may be a fake
If I can afford it right now then it is definately a fake :(

Not in my town. I don't think anyone wants to be caught with counterfeit Infi. They could be next on the menu.

A fake Busse would be very rare indeed and maybe possibly could hold some collectable value in its own right.

Ha ha ha..................... you got that right.............GOOD ONE!!!!

It happens from time to time.

The best answer for me is to know what Busse has used for handle slabs and how they are fastened.

For those in the know you might look under the slabs.

Helps to know your grind lines if you see a same shaped blank.

Fake, old Busse Dog Tags are more common than the real ones anymore.

For more info you need Jerry to make a post about what to look for, and about any knives not properly heat treated or just blanks that may or may not have gotten out of the shop.

Mguy feel free to move this to the back end if it is inappropriate, check with Jerry
