Howdy Bro
I found this forum while recovering from a serious accident. 3 years ago I was in a cycle accident that nearly took my leg off. I have had 10 surgeries and have spent 2 years recovering, not being able to get out or do the things I love. Being a lifetime outdoors man, and Martial artist mobility was everything to me. Life is very different now. The advise I can offer is to take big challenges now. Try those things that you may have dismissed as to hard, to time consuming. Learn a new language, Play a musical instrument. even if you find out it isn't for you, you gave it a try.

Thanks for all the well-wishes and food for though folks. It does help me feel better. There are some interesting ideas there.

At least my accident has got me out of the house work and DIY for a while ;) so I'll have even more time to fill with more fun stuff! And give me time to make some important decisions.

RoyalM - funny you should mention a heavy hammer. I've been thinking exactly the same to build up my sword swinging strength. Better watch the lights though - I once smashed some parts on my parents' chandelier doing that sort of stuff. Never did get found out for that!

Learn to play a harmonica. They are super cheap .You can learn on the internet. I learned at the age of 49 with no musical ability at all.

That sucks big time. That happened to a friend of mine while surfing. He ate it and a skeg caught his ankle; he found the end further up in his leg too. Definitely +1 on the crafting activities to keep you occupied. Carving, sharpening, knife making, leatherwork, paracord tying, netting....all great stuff I'd get into if I were in your position.

I'd find me a wheelchair and keep working. Sounds like from the work that you do, you can do it sitting down. With the ADA (Americans with disabilities act) I would think getting work shouldn't be a problem. Good luck!

He better put some pontoons on that wheelchair and get to paddling if the ADA is going to apply to him ;)

Dougo- I had the same thought.

Foxy Rick--I have one that no one seems to have thought of yet and the best part is it won't cost a dime.

Get someone to bring in some firewood for you then baton it down and make some traps and maybe even a bow and drill set.

You can make split stick traps, figure 4 traps, piute dead falls. There are a lot of traps that can be made in the house for practice and then get a cardboard box or a milk crate and trap the cat or a kid.

As for a career change at 41 if you're still breathing it's not to late to start doing what you love.

I just said a prayer for you and your father's speedy recovery and I'll keep you both in my prayers.

David
