How to swell an axe haft?

I had problems securing the handles on some tomahawks I made. The eyes were pretty round, and the handles would slip and come off when I threw them.
I tried antifreeze and it worked to some extent, but what really did it was driving a wooden wedge into a slot cut with the grain of the handle, then driving two parallel steel wedges (cut from the blade of a store-bought knife) in diagonally to the wedge and grain. Those heads are TIGHT!
