Transition concave to convex

Hi All,

I am working on some knives not to dissimilar to the Gerber mark 2. Gerber makes them with a convex grind the length of the blade. What I want to do is to make the entire blade concave. (hollow grind) That is easy to do on the front of the blade but not on the concave section of it. So if any one has any ideas they would be appreciated. The knife you see below started out concave on the front of the blade and I am willing to make the hollow of the blade convex just cant come up with something that looks right. I keep getting a "bump" at the transition point which is slightly past the point where the blade starts to curve in. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Ken

I think I understand what you're asking but let's see. It would have been easier to just have maintained the flat rather than convexing it but its done. If I understand you correctly the way I do this (and I have done this) is by doing the hollow grind and then rolling the transition to the flat on the wheel. I also us the bit of slack portion just above where you make contact on the wheel to blend the transition. Takes practice but I like it better than leaving the flats and it cuts cheese better... I have some blades I'll be doing this week using this method. Good luck Ken.

Thanks, never thought of using slack as a grinding source. Most of work is done an a KMG with 10" 5" wheels and .75 and 1.5 inch small wheels. I have the flat platen but aside from rough shaping I don't use it to much.

Understood. I would be using the area about 5 or 6 inches behind the 5 or 10 inch wheel.

The wheel should still almost lock into the grind. Only a small section of belt acts a a slack and it's where the belt begins to lift off the wheel.

I think I see what you are getting at But to use the part of the belt just coming off the wheel that would actually be on the bottom and I would be grinding blind. Or are you referring to the top wheel?

Ah. Lol. I forgot to mention. I grind edge down so hitting the top portion is easy for me... Sorry Ken I should have mentioned that.

Don't suppose your from South Florida. I would like to see the grinding edge down. Its actually more intuitive than edge up which if your not real careful you cut a belt in half.
