HOW to Use an Electric Blanket?

Hi All-

Cancer rates have been shown to be higher in areas with high-tension wires nearby, so it absolutely does not make sense to have electrical current running right near your body for HOURS at a time for MONTHS and YEARS on end...

There is lots of concern about this, but I'm pretty sure there's no evidence of it ... donovan mentioned conflicting evidence, but from what I've heard, it's not all that conflicting.

The good news is, even if I'm wrong, there are some electric blankets specifically wired to have the fields cancel out. I don't know how you'd test it ... maybe put your compass just above it and turn the blanket on?

Hi Joe-

Wouldn't it be more prudent to simply heat the bed with the electric blanket and then hop into the sack when it was completely toasty? No muss, no fuss, and reduced risks to health down the road. Combined with flannel sheets and a down comforter this arrangement should be suitable even into freezing temperatures.

There actually seems to be quite a bit of evidence about it, Joe, including recent data reported in the American Journal of Epidemiology suggesting that regular use of an electric blanket may increase breast cancer risk in African American women ages 20 to 64 and a 1990 report by David Savitz, an epidemiologist at the University of North Carolina, that determined that pregnant woman who used electric blankets have children who have a 30% increased risk of cancer as compared to children whose mothers didn't use electric blankets. Additionally, Dr. Nancy Wertheimer, who first published the epidemiological study showing a correlation between 60-Hz power lines and the increased incidence of childhood cancer in this country, has also performed similar research on users of electric blankets. She has found that there is a higher incidence of miscarriages among pregnant women who use electric blankets as compared to pregnant women who do not.

That all came from about 3 minutes of my time and a Google search. People can do as they please, but my position is that we are being constantly bombarded by ELF electromagnetic waves. They are known to be harmful in varying degrees. Wouldn't it be prudent to limit our exposure when we can? Throw on an extra blanket. Let the dog sleep on the bed. Warm up the bed with an electric blanket and then unplug it. It just seems like a good way to keep the odds on our side.

If anyone is interested here are a couple of articles that discuss this:

from Popular Electronics: http://www.direct.ca/trinity/elf.html

and here's one from some guy, but it has some interesting citations: http://www.mercola.com/article/emf/emf_dangers.htm
