My friend, who is fairly new to camping, just got a backpack from cabelas, however, it does not have the traditional cavas strapping to attach a tent at the bottom of the pack. Instead it has what is in the picture. What are these for and how can I use them? My real goal is to attach a tent.

You could run some straps through it and attach something that way. Not sure how sturdy it would be though, I wouldn't attach anything too heavy until you test it out a little bit.

They look pretty sturdy, I would say you could run some cord or webbing straps through the slits, and tie a tent on that way.

Looks like they are for slipping the comopression/tie straps from a sleeping bag or tent stuff sack through.

That should work just fine! Just go to whatever store (hardware store, military surplus, etc.) that sells Coghlan products, and pic up some straps. ONe of these should do just fine:

Those patches on the bottom of the pack are for attaching something relatively lightweight like a sleeping pad, rolled up jacket, etc. I would not attach a tent there - they tend to be heavier, and could tear out the patch. YMMV.

I'd tend to agree with Grampa. Your friend might want to consider packing the tent in the main compartment, putting the poles in a side pocket and then using the bottom for a sleeping pad.

I've been using those to hold my sleeping bag, tent bag and foam roll since at least 1978 to go backpacking. Either add the utility straps posted above, or some larger stuff-sacks will have straps already sewn onto them.
