How usable would you consider this knife?

Thanks for the responses! :)
I'm going to use it as a letter opener for now on so i can get use out of it
Sounds good and your wife may appreciate your using it. Use it as a desk knife and you'll get a feel for whether or not you want to broaden the usage out.

ARGH!....The shear awfulness of that "engraving" almost blinded me.

Use it or put it away in a deep dark corner.

Guy gets a gift from his wife and loves the look of it. You come along and piss in his Cheerios by insulting the engraving. Real nice.

Besides, he asked about function, not aesthetics.
Probably jealous , not everyone's SO even approves of knives , let alone gifts one !;)

Honestly... It's a forum. You don't want to hear someones opinions then don't log onto the internet.

Just want to add When a steel says stainless... They are using a steel that's not particularly good for cutlery. But its possible it won't be too bad.

It does have a beautiful handle, it's a useful design and it was a gift from a special person, so I say get it sharpened up with a good edge angle, put a nice polished edge on it and see what it can do! And no, the locking mechanism will not turn into a death trap if you just use the knife responsibly.

You could do a test and compare it to any of your other frequently carried knives- sharpen both to a similar edge, then start slicing cardboard. See how much you can slice with each knife before they reach the same amount of dull.
I did this once with a custom knife that I had bought years ago. I didn't remember what the steel in the knife was claimed to be, and the workmanship of the knife after I received it was suspect. I decided if it performed then that was sufficient evidence that it was or was not a good knife. Turns out that it cut reasonably well, not as well as a contemporary knife with good steel, but good enough for light duty use.

It will be fine. If the blade starts flopping around, stop using it. Sharpen it up and have it ready for the Christmas morning box opening party

Happy Holidays!
