i cant help it,but after i have used one of my knives i just have to clean, wash, oil and sharpen it (if sharpening is necessary) before im putting it away. i just cant throw it in my knifebox,it must be ready for the next trip. is that too much care???

I guess it depends on how I used it. If I gutted a deer or cleaned fish with it I will clean them and oil them and put them away. Most of the time I just wipe them off and put them away.

Depends on use, but I do clean the ones I use if they need it.

Nothing wrong with having your tools ready to go. I wish I was that organized.

I mostly use folders. I wipe the blade before closing it. If I'm done using it and it isn't stainless, then I'll wipe the blades with a drop of oil on my fingers.

I always keep mine clean in dodecapods. Once a month I try to oil them but its getting harder and harder with every knife I add.

My maintenance is a bit more obsessive. In the case of my Bucks, the brass must be polished, the blade cleaned and if necessary, lubed. Every month or so, I apply some Blue Lube® Cleaner and then a final lube with Blue Lube®.

I will touch up the edges with a strop, but I avoid a full sharpening where possible and I will never put any knife away wet and dirty.

I clean the blade every time adhesive tape marks are left behind after cutting cardboard boxes and before and after preparing food.

The removal of dust on the steel liners and other areas is done by blowing it out and using running water or cotton earbuds to remove the dust.

Sharpening is done once every 7-10 days depending on the steel and application. My folders are done to scraping-sharpness (able to scrape skin flakes on the legs).

Frequency of lubricating the area between the blade washers and the blade tang and oiling the blade depends on whether the folder can be opened with one hand using the thumbstuds as quickly as possible (without flicking).

I clean my EDC's quite often, but that's more because it's something I enjoy doing while watching TV.

I'll rarely take apart one of my folders to clean it, and usually when there's some kind of grit stuck in the pivot making it grind.

Sometimes the pocket lint, grit and gunk that comes out of those knives surprises me.

I spent a good part of my day throwing a 600 dollar Busse NMFBM at a tree round and chopping up wood with it. It fell in the ground several times, hitting rocks, landed on another knife etc.. I just put it away covered in dirt and sap.

That's pretty much how I take care of my knives. :D

I'll just say I take very good care of my blades ;)

Wipe the blade on my jeans, close it, put it back in my pocket.
About monthly though I'll take apart and clean whatever ones have been used.

I actually take very good care of my knives but is excessive sharpening considered abuse? :)

Singularity,

What do you mean by excessive? If you mean touching up the blade with a few strokes after using it, maybe not.

I can normally get away with just stropping my EDC folders. It's my fixed blades that normally need sharpening after use, as I use them to clean up the yard and garden.

We probably ought to start an new thread on this topic.

I will sharpen mine any time it fails to pop hair on my arm (that varies with use and blade type). Additionally, whatever knife I am carrying gets stropped several times daily on whatever I have handy (usually denim...and this works really well BTW).

Most knives I use will not make it a week before I have to "sharpen" them (this typically involves starting on the DMT fine and proceeding to a polished edge). Once in a while I do something stupid that results in damage (nick) and I will pull out coarser media.

Excessive? Nope, I enjoy every minute of it and I doubt I will ever wear out a blade...I buy new ones way too frequently.

I care for my knives as soon as it is required. I clean before and after food chores always. I sharpen as soon as they are not cutting how I like to keep them. I oil the pivots of folders only when they need it for my thumb's preference. I keep Carbon steel blades for non-food use covered in Ren. wax and reapply after hard use. For food prep Carbon steel blades, they get a fresh thin coat of Mineral Oil after each use. Machetes seem to be sharpened after each use because I use them fairly rough.

Good thread!

I just clean off all the gunk on the blade every weekend and re-oil it, I will rarely oil my stainless steel knives though. I'll sharpen it when it won't cut as smoothly and it goes back in my pocket.

MY primary EDC get an air hose once a week and is sharpened as needed. My other users and cleaned up as needed. Brand new blades are kept in original packagings or microfiber sunglass bags. Not much oil needed on a brand new/un-used safe queen. This also depends on blade materials too. I do not have anything which requires oiling.
