How would you answer?

I think that this thread really is more about collecting than the difference between a custom and an original Buck 110.

In my opinion, I think that there are collectors that just like to put things on display, maybe to show their tastes, maybe to show their affluence, but the things that they purchase, just to show off, collect dust more than anything. A Buck Knife that you use collects more than dust. A Buck Knife that gets used also collects memories. Buying a custom Buck Knife means that you're taking an orginal Buck and jazzing it up with some features that you like or need in your knife. If you want a harder blade, for special purposes, or elk scales, that won't allow the knife to turn in your hand, then you almost *need* a custom Buck.

However, then again, this all boils down to if one's going to use a knife, rather than just put it on display....

Whether it's custom or an original style, it's a shame not to use a Buck Knife!

Well said! I admit now that I've actually carried and used it for a week, I am really liking it. I wanted a good strong folder with bone or antler scales, and I'll admit part of what made me order a custom instead of just a stock 110 was the desire (silly maybe) to have something that wasn't "what everyone else" was carrying.

It's funny when I think about it, I was reluctant to carry it because it cost over 100.00 dollars, but yet for years I didn't hesitate to carry and use a Spyderco Chinook or any number of folders or fixed blades that cost more???

Why in the H-E-Double Hockey Sticks would anybody actually drive a custom Corvette when they could keep it safe in a garage while tooling around town in a Daewoo?

Good one! I may "adapt" that as my answer.....

"Why would I pay that much for a knife that I wouldn't use?"

You got the knife because you wanted it. You carry and use the knife because you like it. YOU earned and plunked down the cash for knife. The best answer I can give you when people ask why you use such a fine knife is "because I want to". I have a Randall 11 and a Randall 27. Both go hunting and get bloody, scratched, and used. I get the same questions. I bought those knives, like all my others, to use.
