Survival Test

Here's the situation: a small plane you were piloting solo had to make a emergency landing a wooded hilly region, fifty miles from civilization. You have a pretty good idea of where your at. Lets just assume no one knows where you are, and the electronics on your craft are completely inoperable, and your out of cell range. Also, you are uninjured. Luckily you have mild weather conditions. High mid 70s to low 40s at night.

Here's the fun part, you can have any gear on your person, but that gear must be currently in your house or car, and it must be able to fit in a pack you can carry. So, for all you people that have a Sat phone or jetpack your already saved :)

How would you do, what gear would you have, and how long would it take you to cover those fifty miles?

I'll go first....I'd like to think I would make it. I have a day pack in my garage with the following that I bring on extended trips.

I think I could get out in two days at a normal pace.......maybe:D

1. gallon of water, more if I could fit it.
2. Med kit (small)
3. GPS and compass
4. Three MREs
5. Med size Busse knife
6. Army Swiss knife
7. Bic lighter and matches
8. Two-three mil trash bags
9. Pancho liner
10. 100 ft of 550 para-cord
11. Signal mirror

Remember this is just a hypothetical (fun) survival test.

I take it easy and go with 3-4 days hiking it out. Staying next to water and firewood for night. Why rush when you can get 3 days away from the office and cell phones?

I keep this in my car since my trip to AZ, I found it to be the best weight and comfort for all day walking.

Walking out of a plane crash with monkey butt just ruins any good survival experience. NEVER FORGET THE BABY WIPES!

Where are we crashing again? Whatever gear I have in my house or car isnt gonna do me much good if im in a plane thats about to crash..

Robert,

Do you have some closeups of that knife in the kydex? I have a newer tour pack, and I've been trying to find a good way to secure it to the outside. Looks like yours has some extra straps. The knives I'm thinking about have similar kydex sheaths w/ big tekloks.

I do, although I did have to sew an extra "belt loop" on the hip belt.

I believe I would camp, hang out, and build a nice smoky fire of aircraft parts. Only fifty miles from civilization, it would get noticed quicker than I could walk out. Hey, where is Steve Fossett anyway? :p

I'm just sayin! Keg of beer & a felling axe. I'm stayin put! :D

maybe an inflatable companion/flotation device and some Barry White CDs.

Fanny pack with the basic 3 tools for fire, water and shelter maybe some gorup and some good hiking shoes.

Stay put. If one was a good pilot, one would have filed a flight plan or had flight following. Rescue will come. Stay put!
