How would you spend $300 at Boye Knife?

If you had a $300 credit at the David Boye Knife Gallery in Santa Cruz, what would you get? I won a raffle and have a $300 prize to spend. Help me decide how!

I think I have narrowed my choices down to three:

1) a 3" Utility (Basic) in Cobalt Dendritic, the blade has a nice grain pattern, and is engraved ~CO~ (for the element) not COBALT like they usually do. ($180)

2) a 3" Utility (normal Dendritic) with a nice wooden handle, and an etching of a "big cat" walking down a mountain slope on the blade. ($420)

3) a 3" Utility (normal Dendritic) with a really nice wooden handle, a plain blade, but nicer two-tone bolster spacers than the etched knife. ($340)

But they also have some nice Cobalt folders with wooden and linen micatra handles, kitchen knives, even a $1000 pair of matching steak knives! What would you get? Would you use the word "nice" less?

I'd buy a lot of bar stock and have customs made for me, but if you found something that you'd love, go for it.

Congratulations on your prize. I think David's dendritic steel, together with his artful blade craft, make a high performance combination that's hard to beat.

Before opting for the cobalt over his cast 440C, I'd suggest you read Cliff Stamp's comparison tests (especially see "Conclusion and modifications"):

Congratulations Thomas, you're a lucky dog.

Sounds like you've already got some good ideas. But I also wouldn't move so quickly past the cast 440C. Keep in mind that it isn't "normal" 440C -- cuts much more aggressively and keeps a keen edge for a very long time. Also, the cobalt blades cannot be etched with the great designs that come on many Boye blades. (Or, you can always have a custom etch made for you ...!)

Door Number 3, close enough and still a nice blade, love David Boye's work.

Very lucky indeed!

I have some Boye knives, I've noticed the gallery charges about twice what you'd pay from anyone else if you can get the same knife.

With that in mind I would skip any model you could buy elsewhere, and spend the money on a knife that's custom or unique that you CAN'T get from someone else.
