I have a DMT Diamond stone for field sharpening. Its a little heavy but not bulky and worth it in my opinion. How long would those last?

I have a DMT I just sharpened a knife with last night. Bought when I was 17 and I am now 38. Probably sharpened hundreds of knives on it and it still cuts like it did when it was new :)

the EZ lap diamond rod is what i use and i cant see it breaking anytime soon or wearing out and it sharpens certain blade shapes better.

the cautions that i have read with diamond sharpeners is not to press too hard, to just let the diamonds do the cutting. if you press too hard, you risk ripping the diamonds out of the matrix.

i use sandpaper/mousepad on a block of wood. it would last a while, but i could see the sandpaper getting worn out within a month or two (average time between replacement). but even worn out sandpaper is still good for sharpening...just at a finer grit than it is rated for fresh.

my dad had a dmt for about ten years before he gave it to me and it still works great, to better answer your question

where do you guys buy those DMT diamond hones? I want to get two of them and couldn't find any on eBay...

I have an old Eze-Lap rod that fits into it's handle .Much of my sharpening is done with it. How old ? Well it still has the CA address It must be 20+ years old. It's gotten finer in time. I was recently told I shouldn't use a diamond sharpener because it will wear out the blade ! If you bear down on it yes but you don't need more than a few light strokes to do the job.
Mikel, you might contact DMT or Eze-Lap to find their dealers in Europe.
