How you got your first knife

Most knife collectors remember their first knife. I got my first blade when i was 12 by some kid ditching his folder in my backpack at the skate park when the cops came. The knife was a cheap m tech that I still have today in my collection.

So, how did you get your first knife?

I believe around 11-12. I had seen a few knives and thought I needed one. I would use crappy utility blades to sharpen sticks and what not. One day I was at a local antique shop and I found a knife display. I had 7$ on me and picked out a simple folder with a drop point blade. Still have it although its seen better days. I'd still carry it today even though its only 440a. Although I wouldn't let anybody see my jarbenza.

i don't still have it, but my dad gave me a tiny little no name knife that looked like a really small buck 110 with a pearl white handle.

Mine was from my dad as well, small black handled folder, when I was 6 or 7. I remember I accidentally brought it to school once and it fell out of my pocket. They called my dad in and told him what happened and gave him the knife. I remember the teacher had a big grin thinking I was gonna get a beat down as we were walking out. When we left, my dad told me I should never do it again, lose my knife that is, as he handed i back. I love my old man.

i was about that same age. when i was in school (even high school) you could hand one of your teachers a knife you didn't realize you had and ask them to hold it for you till the end of the day, and nobody batted an eye. i remember one guy somehow accidentally bringing a sword to school in his truck. somebody told on him, and he got detention.

I begged and begged and begged until my dad gave me an old folder that would have had a tough time cutting butter. Memory is fuzzy, but I would guess it was a peanut or most likely something cheap but of similar design. I don't know how old, but I do know we were in the first house that I remember so that means I was 3rd grade or younger. So maybe 8 years old? I'm not heart broken that I don't have it still, it was a turd. But it did teach me the importance of a sharp knife, because a dull knife is just a bad pry bar.

This brings back memories, good ones.

I was a young (7-8 years old) karate student (shotokan) and I wanted a "ninja sword" so my mom bought me a cheap one to display in my room. After that, my dad started buying me knives and swords left and right! Every year for my bday/Xmas he would get me a new knife/sword. One year, my dad found an old WWII knife in an old tool box he bought, so he stripped the handle and made a nice marble handle for me; it was my first "custom" knife:D

Sadly he passed away 4 years ago...but ironically at his funeral one of his close friends came up to me and gave me $200 and told me "buy some of those knives your dad used to get you". So I bought a benchmade 51 to start flipping. Ever since then, I never looked back and only buy "high-end" knives now.

I never thought a simple thread could bring a tear to my eye, but it did. So there ya go; call me a sissy if you will...

Here's that custom WWII knife my dad made me next to the bm 51 that started it all:

God, I miss my old man...

We could bring guns to school.....

My first knife I bought (age 6 or 7) at a neighbors garage sale. It was a small slip joint with blue scales. I cut my finger (up the finger nail) with it while riding home on my bike. Not sure what happened to the knife after that.

my grandpa gave me my first knife it is a two bladed Barlow and I still have it to this day.

My first was a Boy Scout knife that my Dad bought me when I joined. Unlike today's society, back then people didn't automatically assume you were a moron and going to hurt yourself with it. Or if you did you would learn the lesson and not do it again.

Mine was a Buck 110 that my old man gave me when I turned 7. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I still remember my second knife too - one of those hollow-handled survival jobbies that you can pick up from a flea market for a few bucks.

I am guessing it was a gift from my father. I don't remember the circumstances very well. The knife itself was a red-handled Swiss Army Knife of some kind, pretty basic model. I was somewhere in the 10-12 year age range. I have no idea what became of that knife, and I probably wouldn't remember it at all if it were not for the small scar on my left hand to remind me of it.

My dad gave a fixed blade knife on my 4th birthday. My mother said that he turned me loose with it, too. I was free to carry and use it unsupervised. He would probably get arrested for that today, but in the ensuing 64 years, I have never even cut myself any more than a small nick, or used a knife irresponsibly. It was a made-in-Japan ( back in 1950 when that meant cheap) small clip-point with real fake stag plastic handles with a compass insert. I still have it and the compass still works. The cheap sheath is long-gone, but the knife remains.

I was a around 10. It was a swiss army knife (victorinox). My Dad gave it to me. I don't have it anymore and I don't know what happened to it. I really wish I still had it. I do still carry the scar on my pinky where the long blade closed on my finger when I stupidly stabbed something while camping 20 or so years ago.

I was quite young, under six years old for sure (my brother hadn't been born yet). In my family there's a fixed blade that used to belong to a great grandfather of mine that gets passed down to the youngest kid who's ready to carry a knife. My brother was the last to get it. I don't have any pictures. It's a Swedish blade with a cast aluminium handle and sheath made by a local company that used to import tools from Scandinavia.

It looks just like this one (photos taken from an Argentine forum):

My dad's old boyscout knife.
Cut my finger the first day with the punch. LOL

my dad got me a balisong when i turned seven. my mom wouldn't let me have it so he gave me a gerber Mark 1 instead. i still have the gerber.

The one I first remember was a SAK that my grandmother gave me. Really wish I still had it and had held on to it cause she has recently passed and don't have a whole lot to remember her by except some old horror movies we used to watch together and a silver dollar. Got a very small folder still from my grandpa on the other side of family. Not givin to me but found it in a tackle box. Way really hoping there would be an old gem but looks like one you would win at a carnival. But still have the fishing tackle and box that im happy for that. Gonna use both for most part except for a couple old Rapala's. Gonna use tackle box as ammo box probably for ducks..

My mom bought me my first knife in August 1963 along with backpack, pencils, erasers, pens, notepads and other staff at office supply store for thr first grade. All boys needed knives to sharpen pencils.
