How you got your first knife

I was visiting my family in new York city and one night we went to China Town. After passing a bunch of stores that any 14 year old boy would go crazy in (knives, ninxhucks etc..) We got to our restaraunt. I told my dad I was hyper and needed to take a walk. I ran as fast as I could a block or two away to the last cool looking store and got my first modern folder, a jaguar as model for 5-10$. Walked back in saying I felt calmer. Lol. Got taken by a cop when I was 17.

This brings back memories, good ones.

I was a young (7-8 years old) karate student (shotokan) and I wanted a "ninja sword" so my mom bought me a cheap one to display in my room. After that, my dad started buying me knives and swords left and right! Every year for my bday/Xmas he would get me a new knife/sword. One year, my dad found an old WWII knife in an old tool box he bought, so he stripped the handle and made a nice marble handle for me; it was my first "custom" knife:D

Sadly he passed away 4 years ago...but ironically at his funeral one of his close friends came up to me and gave me $200 and told me "buy some of those knives your dad used to get you". So I bought a benchmade 51 to start flipping. Ever since then, I never looked back and only buy "high-end" knives now.

I never thought a simple thread could bring a tear to my eye, but it did. So there ya go; call me a sissy if you will...

Here's that custom WWII knife my dad made me next to the bm 51 that started it all:

God, I miss my old man...

Beautiful story and great pics. A real man isn't scared to show his emotions.

I can remember buying my first fixed blade. I must have been about 10 years old. I got it from the local general dealer and what I remember was him asking me if I was a Cub Scout. I was a Cub and when I told him so he was quite happy to sell me the knife. Can't remember what it was, pot steel no doubt.

My first knife was an tiny Imperial in the 2nd grade which I bought myself from my allowance. It was $0.50. Grew a bit and got another larger Imperial at the 5&10 for about $1.00. Got my first Case Barlow when I was around 10. Needed it for my woods activities as well as day to day EDC stuff. I can't remember not having a knife in my pocket but I feel sure I didn't in the 1st grade because I started getting an allowance in 2nd grade. Parents never really gave me much of anything unless I bought it. Never seeked their approval for such things, but I suspect they paid attention. Worked in a factory when I was 15 for the summer. Bought my first deer rifle with a portion of the earnings from that summer. I saved nearly every penny.

My first knife was a birthday present back when I was 10 ish. I forget the brand of the knife, because I lost it a week or two after getting it. It was a folder, with black skeletonized handles. I remember the blade being about 3" long.

I was about 3 and my Dad made my first "knife"...
It was made from a popsicle stick or something similar, he had whittled it to the shape of a knife. I remember holding it and thinking "whoa cool". Then he said "wait a minute, I forgot to temper it".
I had no idea what he meant. He took out his Zippo and "tempered" the blade so it was blackened. That was just "IT" for me.
That was about 45 years ago.
Sure do miss my Dad.

SAK Huntsman. Folks gave it to me when I was in grade school in the mid '70s. 1985 fell out of my pocket into Ocracoke Harbor and there it rests to this day. I miss it, but at least I will always know where it is.

I actually made my first "own" knife in shop-class. Plain birch handle with cheap carbon-steel blade from a kit. It turned out pretty good though, awesome ergonomics (for the hands of a 14-yo) and polished to perfection. Still have it stuffed away somewhere, but it' really uncomfortable for my man-hands, and I don't ever use it.
