How you liking the Southard?

I had one and sold it in the market place.....

Beautiful fit and finish, loved the ergos etc. But for the price I paid, it became a safe queen and ended up funding other knives.

I just tend to use the under $100 Spydercos....I think it is because if I like a knife, how easy would it to replace it if it is lost etc. The Southard was beyond that category.

The knife had a wonderful fit and smooth action. But with the tip up carry, I reached in my pocket on day and enough of the meat of my thumb got into the knife tip and I had a really nice slice. That was the last time I carried it. A design flaw IMHO

Bought one a couple of months ago, had great fit and finish, excellent flipper. Just a bit too long. Got the Paramilitary 2 a few days ago, don't really care about the Southard at all anymore :(. Also I agree with jewellfish, the knife tip can be touched if enough of a finger or thumb pushes through, have never hurt myself with it but its definitely a slight problem.

Well, I'll voice the opposition. I have a lot of variously customized Southards, and I've carried one or another of them almost every day for a long time and I've never managed to touch the tip of the blade. I mean, if I take the closed knife and hold it in my hand, I can definitely work a finger tip in there and touch the tip, but it's never happened to me accidentally and I carry the knife all the time.

As the OP of this thread who now has a Southard in hand I write to say -

PERFECT !

First off - it is beautiful (as much as a folding knife can be ). I love the shape and the length of the blade, the stone washed effect, and the proportions overall. In my medium size hand I very naturally land on all the resting spots for a very very secure grip and workability. The thickness of the blade, the flipper and the lock up are all great assets for a knife I intend to carry as an EDC work knife.

If one must include a con or two my very insignificant hmms are about the size of the Spydie hole and the clip. The hole size is nearly irrelevant with the flipper. The flipper works very well and with authority. With the small hole I have found myself landing a couple of times pretty close to the cutting edge as I played with the action tonight. Never an issue with other Spydercos but the hole on this one is close to the blade edge. Again - no matter with the flipper, and making it otherwise would change the overall shape to the detriment of the design. As for the clip - I think that the handle fits my hand soooo well that I am more aware of it than normal with other knives. Again, no matter, it is a slight aggravation far outweighed by the convenience of the pocket clip. To the issue of stabbing myself with the tip up carry I have to agree with evilgreg …"if I take the closed knife and hold it in my hand, I can definitely work a finger tip in there and touch the tip,…" . I think I would really need to work at that. Never been an issue for me with any tip up carry knife and this blade seems even more nested in the scales than some others.

Now the real test will be carrying it and using it through the next few weeks. I am very optimistic. This is a beauty and a perfect size - expensive yes, but years of service ahead I expect. I won't loan it to anyone and so will likely not ever lose it :).

Thanks for the comments and encouragement. As we know there are a lot of Spydercos for all reasons and carriers - nice to find a real keeper for me.

One of the best Spydercos out there. Shares pocket time with my Hinderer 3.5 slicer and large Sebenza Insingo. Flipper is great, excellent steel, and the size is perfect. The only issue I had was the clip design. Fixed that with a low rider clip from STR and now the knife is close to perfect.

One of the all time best folders for edc in my opinion.
I love mine.

I wanted it like it. So much so that I bought it, sold it, then bought another. Ended up selling it. The handle just didn't fit my hand. I wanted it to be larger.

I think a larger version would be a hit - maybe a 1/4 size up length wise. Smaller? Not so much. It's a pretty small package as it is even with the length of the blade.

Glad you like it Rayse! Obviously from all the positive responses, most people love the knife. Sorry if I gave you the pre delivery jitters but that knife just didn't fit me at all. We all have different hands and grips. Glad this one is working for you!

I really liked mine, and stupidly sold it to fund something else, and now I am looking for another one on the exchange. It just works for me.

It's one of - if not 'the' - favorite blade shapes for me. Powerful, graceful, useful, unique. Unlike many, I find the pocket clip good-looking (but a little pokey on occasion)... and am THRILLED to have a thinner CF replacement scale on mine.

It is an amazing blade. Very gentlemanly for its size, yet capable. LOVE IT.

The ONLY larger knife that somehow I find fit to be used as EDC as well.
I carry mostly 3" and under EXCEPT this one.

The only thing to note is that the handle thickness is not symmetrical between the G10 side and Ti Side.
Stonewash on blade and Ti is just amazing!

MUST HAVE if you can get one. :D
