Also what age did you receive your first knife? Mine was a case yellow jacket I think I was 6 when I got it

Thanks guys should I get them something safer?

I don't think Id get them knives for their birthdays...theyre 13, what use do they have for a knife? I didnt need a knife when I was younger, but I did get into BB guns.

That would be a great present for you I think, lol

I don't recall the exact year of my first knife (Schrade UH Stockman). I still carry it though. I'd say it depends on the kid's responsibility and the parents wishes. I bought my nephew an SAK at 8 and he hasn't cut any bodyparts off yet. Personally, I had a 20 gauge NEF and a 30-30 Marlin before I was their age.

If you wanna compromise a bit, Victorinox and Opinel both make rounded tip blades for just that sorta situation.

I got my first knife that I bought for myself at 8, so if they are responsible I say get it for them! I used mine all the time whitling and cutting fishing line and all the other myriad tasks you can think off!

They need some knives, asap.

With few exceptions I'd say everyone needs a knife at least once a day. Clean finger nails, whittle, open stuff, heck keep yourself entertained with a dead branch for quite a while.

Cheaper knives are fun to stick in the dirt or trees.

I think I got my knife somewhere between 10 and 12, boys need stuff to be responsible with. they'll be men in a few short years, and being responsible for something as basic as a knife is a great start.

Ya I guess they have no general use for a knife but I remember when my grandpa gave me my knife that is something I will never forget and even more now that he has passed on. I guess I thought I could build a bond with them due to them not having a father around.

Without knowing the kids concerned it's impossible to say what they might, or might not, have a use for.

I grew up in the bush, on and around farms, and I've had a pocket knife for as long as I can remember and often used it for various things. A knife could be a suitable gift depending on the kid and their situation.

Having said that, my 14 year old nephew has grown up in the city and a knife is probably the last thing I'd buy him. He'd be more interested in an iphone or some such technological bit of junk.

Circumstance is everything.

You did fine with getting them a knife.
Teach them the proper way to use one and then tell them the inappropriate uses so they'll know the difference.
It'll make them more responsible.

Next show them the different types of locks, steels, handle materials, color, brands, sheaths etc.... :)

This post makes me chuckle.
No use for a knife but a BB gun is ok. :D

I'm trying to teach these boys to be men like my dad and grandpa taught me and I think getting them these knives is the best way to start. Show them how to widdle and trap and really to me a knife on a day to day basis is a tool first before a defensive tool ill leave that to my fists lol. I want them to be outdoors making lasting memories not beating a stupid level on a video game.

I had my 1st real pocket knife at age 8 and 1st gun at 11.

I say get parental permission first, obviously. :D

I was in Scouts at 13, and carrying a swiss army knife all the time. A SAK might be your best bet. Most kids love gadgety things, and a SAK with multiple tools will probably go over easier with the parents, and seem more useful to the kids.

The 11 year-old, I'm not too sure about. You could always get him something small, like a SAK classic.

...As far as the BB guns go, I used to shoot BB guns and .22's all the time with my Dad, around the same age. Lots of fond memories there.

Ya I'm thinking a mulitool or a swiss now would be a better all around tool for the kids plus I could teach them how to do other things with them instead of just cutting tasks. Maybe I liked them for myself cause there so inexpensive lol

Got my first folder at 8. A SAK would be a great first knife. I got my son a knife at 8 but he turned out to be too immature. He got his next one at 18.

Get them their knives. It's part of them becoming responsible young men. Also teach them how to handle it and not abuse it. It will be very rewarding.

I got my first pocket knife at 8 as well. My dad said that if I got all A's on my report card he would buy me one. It was a Bear & Sons Mini Manger lockback. Then he had the bolsters engraved with my initials and the year. I still have the knife; it was bought in 1994 (I'm 25 now), along with my fathers Buck 501 as he passed away the following year. Two pieces in my collection that I will never part with.

Its cool to hear what your guys had as your first knives and what age I think. The next one I got was at the age of 12 it was a spyderco (unknown cause I lost it ) go figure but black handle full serrations want to say it was a delica

I've had knives since I was probably four, but everyone had knives in southeast Texas (boonies) when I lived there in the seventies.
It kinda depends on how you're raised.
City kids and knives are a kind of a different thing than country kids and knives.
I was raised with a healthy respect for tools (knives/guns).
Many aren't.
