how young is too young nowadays

Teach them the proper way to use one and then tell them the inappropriate uses so they'll know the difference.
It'll make them more responsible.

Next show them the different types of locks, steels, handle materials, color, brands, sheaths etc.... :)

I agree, make it a lesson every time you see them and they are around. really teach them some cool stuff with the knife as well. there are so many uses for knives in our lives. maybe someday they will become knife makers, dealers or something cool all because of that first knife their cool uncle gave them.

I think that it says something very sad about how our country is changing that we even have to ask "how old before you get a knife?"

My grandfather gave me a knife when I was around 8 years old and I did not live in the "boonies". He taught me how to use it, how to sharpen it, clean it and told me never to use it as a weapon. It stayed in my pocket until I needed it. Then I used it, wiped it off and placed it back in my pocket.

I see posts above where the minimum legal age to own a knife is 16. What the hell is that all about? Can the kid use a steak knife in a restraunt or does daddy have to cut the steak for him until he is 16? What if he is a cub scout?

It really depresses me to think that this is even an issue for the government to address.

By the way, I've given all 4 of my children knives, at roughly age 8. Mostly multi-tools or SAK's, and I am proud to say that they haven't stabbed, robbed or assaulted anyone with them.

I remember getting my first knife when I was 7 from my grandmother(grandfather had passed by then) it was a single blade slipjoint they used to sell at Kmart in a cup by the checkout in the sporting goods .I know it cost a dollar plus tax because I lost it and decided I needed to replace it as soon as possible, I felt bad that I was careless with it and I Really liked it ; later I found it and had them both for years now .I only have one and I don`t know what one it is but I still use it all the time as a leather skiving knife. I agree with many who have said slippies are the better choice for a first knife I remember learning the value of forethought in what I was about to do by knowing the knife might fold on me and I use that care to this day (I still get nervous stabbing things even with a axis lock with steel liners;) .A SAK would be a great choice then after they use them for 6-8 months let them have the better locking knives when all the lessons are learned.

Cub Scouts still get them at around 8 years old. I'm a bit surprised that by 13 they don't already have at least one, you'd think they would have bought one for themselves at the hardware store if nothing else by then.

Also what age did you receive your first knife? Mine was a case yellow jacket I think I was 6 when I got it

Thanks guys should I get them something safer?

I got my first knife, a Barlow slipjoint, when I was around 7 or 8 (hard to remember - it was quite a while ago). These days I much prefer locking knives, even though slippies do look nice.

I found a knife in the schoolyard when I was in third grade. It was a lockback with brass bolsters and imitation pearl scales. It was called a "PONY 3".
I lost it soon after but my Grandpa gave me a Shrade Uncle Henry. A week later I sliced the top of my right index finger off cleaning out the handle with a Q-Tip in the wrong direction.

My son is 6 now but I am gonna wait a few years even though he shows alot more common sense at his age than I feel I did at 6.
