You have to know what you like in a knife and what you don't like. We all started because we wanted to make them a certain way. We believed that our ideas will make a functional difference.
All opinion from here: Choils, and ricassos are a big no for me for functional reasons. I also make sure my designs pass the "poop silhouette test". Hold your knife in your thumb and forefinger with the handle down. If the silhouette of the handle resembles a piece of poop sliding out of your thumb and forefinger "anus" then re-design the butt of the knife. Turns out that most knives terminate in a few recognizable shapes. Beaked, canoe, etc. Poop shape isn't good generally. Straight lines, or male looking shapes on the knife are a turn off for me as well. I like curvey feminine shaped knives. No poop shapes, no penis shapes. Again, just my opinion.
Pin placement is big too, and for the design rules on those, do a search. The rules are simple and have been discussed a lot.
