How'd your hunting go this fall, and what did you use for a blade?

This was the best hunting season I ever had.
I had to go first season because we had to be out of town during the other seasons. I also could only hunt during the weekend because of the bussy time for my business.
The shooting is not as important as the hunt, so my 12 year old son my brother-inlaw and I went to unwind anyway. The elk were still very busy with the ladies. We saw a 6 point with 6 girlfriends, and the stalk was on. 5 minutes later we found another bunch with a huge 7 point and 8 girlfriends. We never got a shot at either one but had a ball trailing them. That alone would have been the best hunt ever, even though we didn't put one down. I told my son he was going to take the first shot and his limit at this point is 150 yrds. He's a very good shot but that is what we set his limit at. But we had the time of our life trying to get that close. To top the day off my brother-inlaw put down a 700 lb. 4 point bull as the sun was going down. Shot him at 125 yrds with a JDJ .375 pistol, one shot through the lung, he layed down and the work began. The first elk I have ever feild dressed. I make a few knives so I had to feild test one of my own makes. I was very happy with the out come. I didn't realize how big they really are. He was a small one but I was still up to my armpits in elk guts.
And my son was nothing but bright eyes, smiles and blood from head to toe. His excitement was the highlight of the whole trip. A weekend to remember forever!!

ps Jeff Clark,
The hunting really seemed spotty this year in the Colo. Spgs. area. Seemed like a strange year. I think the elk are moving from normall areas???

John, I was out around Craig in NW corner of the state on "Ranching for Wildlife" property. I was booked for first season in a third season kind of area. I was up to my ears in antelope as well as deer. It turned out to be shirt sleeves weather.

Jeff,
It was weird hunting in t shirts this year. It wasn't even very cold in the mornings. It was more like bird watching. Due to the fact that I had to be back at the shop Monday morning, we hunted unit 500 just outside of Lake George. We camped in our bedrooms at home. A little diapointing for my son, but I was greatful after draging the elk down the mountain.

Carried a Ruger 30-06 Mark II Left hand and a Spyderco Wegner.

Might as well have carried a SAK pen knife and a squirt gun.

MNH, is the Spyderco Wegner a good knife for cleaning deer. I have a couple of smaller Spyderco's, but thought I would ask about this specific knife. I notice it is a bit more expensive than my other 2 knives. Is it fairly easy to sharpen? Thanx

Our group of four hunters shot a buck and a doe on the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario Canada. I cleaned both animals with my Puma White Hunter sharpened with Spyderco Sharpmaker with 15 degree back bevel and 20 degree edge. I carried a Browning A-bolt II Composite Stalker in 30-06. My web-site (http://www3.sympatico.ca/kevinandtrish/) has some pics of past hunts and info on the Browning.
Great Thread.

ptpalpha - glad to hear from another local hunting buff and knife nut! I do most of my small game hunting in three areas... the Waterloo Recreation Area out past Chelsea, the Vanderbilt area (great squirrel hunting/camping trips), and the Upper Peninisula. We bought 272 acres in the U.P. several years ago, and have built a nice camp there. Tremendous spot for whitetail and black bear.

Hope we can chat more!
