Hello all...

I have been lurking around the site since late January. Waiting to order since everyone was to be gone for most of febuary. Glad you didn't run into any trouble with the Maoists Uncle Bill. I have been trying to "catch up" on reading the posts but somehow manage to stay a couple of days behind. All the posts I have read latey have been really interesting. I especially loved the picture of the silver Khuk (can't remember how to spell it...

) it was really beautiful. If only money grew on trees...They would be the only ones still standing if I got my hands on some of the Khukri's I have seen here lately...hahaha. I hope to be placing an order for some soon, so far I am drawn to the WWII model just because I have always admired the Ghurka soldiers and their fighting abilities. I think an AK would be next choice, everyone seems to think it is a good blade for a first or second Khuk. I would want one primarily to be lashed to the side of a rucksack for general camp and trail use(any other recommendations appreciated). Also, I was very interested in the suggestions of "Micro venture capital", sounds like another great idea and an excelent way to help someone get a fresh start like the mentors in my life have done for me. So, I would like to participate if those that make the decisions decide it is do-able. Thanks again...and getting more excited about getting khukri's as i read through the posts and see the pix.

Welcome to the forum, Cris. You'll find this to be a supercharged version of the StarWars Cantina and Callahan's Crosstime Saloon mixed together. It has been affectionately named Uncle Bill's Mutant Saloon, among other things.

As for your first khukuri, the WWII is certainly a good choice. I also note that you are already starting to show symptoms of the dreaded HIKV(Himalayan Imports Khukuri Virus), known to be the joy and despair of khukuri knuts worldwide, with your plan to acquire more khukuris(don't forget to also consider any villager or HI blems as these are good value if you intend to use your khukuris and not keep them as wallhangers).

Again, welcome!

Go for the 18" WWII rather than the 16.5". You will then have arguably the best single all around khukuri made.

Then you can buy the next and discover that it is equally as good, just different. It's like being an 18 year old boy trying to choose between blonde, brunette, redhead, or raven tressed cheerleaders. The answer of course is to go after all of them, but which one first?

Oh, and you probably believe that inamimate objects don't have a spirit...

Welcome too the Zoo Cris!!
Sounds like you have made some good choices.

Today was a good day as the sweet wife was out back doing some brush burning. She sent our g'daughter in for a khukuri to use. Of course I sent her out her very own 15" AK.
It done the usual great job on honeysuckle vines and privet as well as some assorted small trees of varied varieties.
She wouldn't use it too close to the barbed wire fence and also didn't hit any rocks with it. There were no nicks or bumps and all it needed was the sap cleaned off when I brought it in for her. I buffed it clean and put some silicne on it and put it back on her side of the bed.
This is the very first time that she has used her own knife.
She knows how to use her knife it seems.

Khukuri FAQ

Hey Chris Welcome!

I won't bother with advice on which khukuri, as the real experts are already responding. I will second the sentiment that this is a great forum, and full of great guys who happen to be khuk (and other areas) experts! I am a newbie to this forum and I already own 5 khukuris, so watch out they are addicting!
Welcome and have fun,
Rob

P.S.

Yvsa,
Thanks for sharing the khuk story from home! sounds like your wife enjoyed the first use of her AK, but as you well know, she is now probably going to catch HIKV! That means 2 folks from one household will have it----yikes! If my wife caught it like me I'd have to live in my car from lack of $$$$

. Also, I got your cornbread recipe off of an old thread. Haven't had a chance to try it but I'll let you know how it turns out!

Welcome Cris. It’s good to have you here.

The 27th must have been a special day. Cris came out of hiding, Yvsa’s wife broke in her khukuri. My daughter Brita first used her 20” sirupati that day also. She just got it on the 19th.

We filled up two lawn trash containers with assorted brush. She was apprehensive at first about what the neighbors would think of a little girl wielding a sword. I explained about the necessity of doing yardwork no matter what they thought. She’s 10 now. By the time she’s 18 and ready to leave home she should be pretty handy with that blade.

She did hit a few rocks, as she was finding appropriate ways to make the blade do what she wanted. We cleaned up the blade with a scotch-brite pad. The mirror finish has its first scratches, and the engraved dragons are becoming covered with mist, as real dragons usually are.

If she keeps using the 20" sirupati she is going to have forearms like popeye. The mental image of a ten year old girl (or is that GRRRRRL) wielding a twenty inch sirupati. This is one for the FAQ page. You might fit it in under the stories heading. Along with a lot of the other Kukhri and family member stories. Just a thought.
