Hi Guys,

I usually leave my edges fairly thick when Ht'ing, in the hope it lessens the chance of warping. So far, I've been pretty successful. But I was wondering, how thick do you leave your edges? What's the thinnest, in general, you could get a good HT result?

I go between .03" and .02" prior to heat treating. I use a digital oven and quench in formulated oil. If you're using a forge, you may want to leave it a tad thicker.

Thanks Guys,

The reason I asked is I made a short sword, 16" blade of 1095, and had to reprofile the blade, because I didn't like the way it cut during my tests. The edge is right about the thickness of a dime-much thinner than I would normally have it. And, well..I thought that would be okay but I was a little nervious.

I use a coal forge, and work outside. Naturally, I sure can't do it now. (waiting for another 60 degree day, which we had only a week ago -it's going down to 5-10 degrees tonight so the wait may be a long one. Oh well!Or I may talk one of the local guys with a propane forge to help we out.

Thanks for all the info. Rick, I read your link too. Thanks guys

David Stifle,

Masterbladesmith Dan builds Roman short swords.
He takes the blade down from center to the edge before H.T.
but with absolutely no edge!
I use thin steel for skinners, 1/16" thick,
and 'Dan' said I ruined some by putting an ever so slight edge on before HT.

The edge looks about as thick as the center.
Dan does everything with sandpaper,
the whole sword!

That's either the worst Haiku ever written, or somebody had WAY too much coffee!:D That sandpaper wouldnt happen to be in belt form, say 2" x 72" in length would it?

Come'on Rick! You don't know Mastersmith Dan? Gott'a be Dan Graves, of course. Or Dan Hanson, oh wait a minute-that's Don.
